The Japanese have long standing traditions in martial arts and therefore also with blade weapons, such as the sword. There are many kinds of Japanese swords, also known as nihonto, and they vary in size, weight and methods used to forge them. Before purchasing one or more of these swords you will have to do some research on the internet to see what kinds are for sale and if they are authentic swords or just replicas.
The most well known and common Japanese sword is the katana, which is also often referred to as a Samurai sword. This type of sword has a distinct look to it and is an average sized sword with a blade that is around or more than 24 inches long. The katana has a curve to the slender blade which makes it easy to recognize from other forms. Other well known and well liked Japanese swords include the shorter Wakizashi sword and the Tsurugi which is identified by the double edges, as well as the long length and the Nodachi which are long swords with single edged blades.
Although they have a long history and there are many models on display in museums around the world, most Japanese swords are battle ready and forged according to the traditional claying methods of the region they originate from. This means that they have different types and strengths of high carbon steel on the blade which is good because it adds to the flexibility, durability and effectiveness of the blade itself and that makes it ideal for practicing, cutting or competing in competitions with. On the other hand, it also means that they require more care in order to keep them in the optimal condition.
In order to keep authentic Japanese swords in good condition you will have to keep the blades oiled using synthetic or natural oils. There are some great sword maintenance kits available. This should be done approximately every six months, but the intervals are ultimately dependent on the storage conditions. Even though you must take care of a Japanese sword properly, it is well worth the time since the good ones are exquisitely adorned, well made and come with very sharp, robust blades. These swords are not only great for using, but also to put on display and collect.

There are many reasons why people would buy battle ready swords instead of display ones. The best reason would be that they want to use the sword for fighting. This can mean anything from demonstrations to reenactments of famous battles or even for competitions, such as those that are common in martial arts disciplines.
It is so important to have a battle ready sword if you are going to use it because the blade is made of different materials and was made with the intention of withstanding the impact of another sword. For battle ready swords a blade is made of high carbon steel that is flexible or which has a so-called spring to it. On the other hand, swords that are just for display usually have blades made with stainless steel, and if that is struck with something then it will easily break. Battle ready swords also have edges that are sharpened or which can be sharpened so that they can cut through things. Therefore they are also a necessary part of demonstrations, such as the cutting of bamboo sticks or rice mats
Of course, there are also other good reasons to have a battle ready sword. For one, with the proper care, it will also remain in good condition for a long time. In order to keep a high carbon steel blade from rusting, however, it will be necessary to regularly oil it. Since a battle ready sword should not be kept inside a sheath for long periods of time, they are also great for all display swords. Even if a sword is not to be used, a battle ready sword simply looks more realistic and authentic because of the materials it is made of which also makes them more valuable as collector’s items.
The advantages of battle ready swords easily outweigh any extra costs that they may incur. You get what you pay for and that is obvious here, because these swords are handcrafted, made of durable materials and you can have years of enjoyment actually using them if you take the time to take care of them properly.

There are many movies, books and famous historical figures that have also had famous swords. These are often popular to the point of being cult and therefore copies are made of them so that every fan is able to own the “real” thing. These replica swords are just as varied as their origins and you’ll have to know what you are looking for or you’ll be overwhelmed by the sheer variety.
Most replica swords are based on real historical models and therefore are suitable for history fans as well as weapon collectors. Having a replica sword from a historical figure, such as William Wallace or a Samurai Shogun, can complete any décor based on the times or round off a collection of other items from the times, such as clothing or furniture. Some replica swords are so realistic that they can be mistaken for the real piece, as is the case with Scottish basket hilt swords or Katana and Wakizashi swords from Japan.
Replica swords that are based on real historical swords are often made to be battle ready. In some cases replica swords are still used for competitions or demonstrations, such as Tai Chi swords or Katana, and thus they have to be able to withstand the rigors of fighting and yet be light and easy to handle. Well made swords should have a high carbon steel blade, secure pommel and high quality wrapping on the grip.
Other replica swords, however, are actually based on swords seen in movies. There are a few good examples of such copies, such as swords from Kill Bill, The Last Samurai and of course the Lord of the Rings. These swords are usually stainless steel and very exquisitely designed, but they are not good for actually using since they are easily broken and also heavier than a real sword should be.
Many websites have replica swords broken down into more specific categories and it is good to compare the swords from different manufacturers. Some companies have a better reputation than others so if you want quality, stick to swords from United Cutlery, for example. If the replica sword is merely to be decoration, then you can just try to find the best price.

Scotland has a long history and over the ages there have been many kinds of Scottish swords & daggers. There are many reasons that someone would want to own a Scottish sword and there are also just as many types of people who would purchase one. There are some things that have to be taken into consideration, though, since traditions and era have a lot to do with the original purpose of the sword.
Many wars have been fought over the centuries between the Scottish people and other folks, such as the English and Irish in the Middle Ages. Among the most popular weapons were the swords and they have changed with time. Historical or Scotland enthusiasts should make sure that they add pieces like the William Wallace sword, Scottish Dirk or Scottish Basket Hilt broadsword. These are all impressive pieces and are great if displayed on a wall mount or a special sword holder for a fireplace mantle or table.
Although people no longer need Scottish swords to defend themselves against invaders, there are still many reenactments that involve simulated sword fights. These can take place during medieval gatherings, Scottish games or role playing reenactments. Since Scotland is a land full of castles and medieval history, it is also often the setting that is recreated for medieval tournaments. To make things even more realistic, there are many replicas of original Scottish swords that are found in museums and the one from William Wallace is probably the most famous example. If a Scottish sword is to be used for battle reenactments, then it is best to ensure that it is battle ready and has a blade made of high carbon steel.
Dancers will also be able to appreciate Scottish swords, though. Especially those than are into Highland dancing will know that a sword is an essential part of folklore dancing. The Scottish sword dance is a famous tradition that combines fighting and artistic skills and which is a ritual performed even today. The Scots are not the only people that have sword dances and a Scottish sword can also be used to perform similar dances that have a different background, such as Basque, English or German.

This article will address the various types of materials used to forge swords and which one is still the best.
As a sword collector, you are already aware that there are multiple types of materials used to forge the blades of the swords you collect. In some cases you can find stainless steel swords and even Damascus swords but which one should you buy?
Well that depends mostly on the type of collection you are looking to build. But first let’s summarize what is the main difference between some of these materials.
Stainless Steel Swords:Swords made of stainless steel swords are “Display swords” only. These are not to be manipulated like real swords. They are not meant to withstand the rigors of battle and/or cutting exercises. Even though some of them comes fully sharpened it is strongly recommended to avoid using them as real swords. The advantages of buying Stainless steel swords is that they are usually cheaper and are a lot easier to take care of. Stainless steel is a very resistant to rust.
High Carbon Steel Swords: Steel is the material of choice when it comes to building a swords that meets the requirements of shock absorbance, resistance to fracture, strength and all the other factors that requires a real and battle-ready sword. Although this material is still the material used today to produce high quality swords, it doesn’t mean that these swords are invulnerable. The quality of the sword will always depends on the technique used to forge the sword.
Damascus Blade:Damascus swords are known in history as some of the most sharp and durable blades. They were known to be able to cut through lesser quality European swords. Although you can find Damascus swords on the market today, it is not a real replica of the ones used in the medieval times. The original raw materials and the “recipes” have been lost during history. Todays’ Damascus blades are a result of mixing to types of steel.
If you are looking to build a collection of real and battle-ready swords, in that case you need to be looking for High Carbon steel blades and Damascus blades. Keep in mind that these types of swords require a lot more maintenance than the stainless steel blades. If you are more into Fantasy swords and display swords, than Stainless steel is the perfect material for you. Keep in mind that these are display swords ONLY.

The ninja has to be well versed in the usage of many types of unique weapons. Ninja weapons & swords require skill and can be very effective if you know how to use them right. Anyone who trains in the Ninjutsu forms of martial arts will at some point have to buy Ninja weapons, because they are a major and essential part of the training and learning process. Of course it is not necessary to personally train in order to own or collect the various fascinating ninja weapons. If mounted on walls or racks, they also make an eye-catching and interesting collection to put on display.
Any collector of ninja weapons should have enough room to put them all on display. This is because there are many different types that will have to be shown and a complete collection can be quite extensive. The weapons can range from the kama, which can be disguised as a sickle, to the ninjato sword and even a variety of throwing knives and stars. There are also shuriken to be displayed, which are stakes made of iron or steel and which are throwing weapons.
Just as diverse as the weapons are the techniques used by those training in one of the ninja martial arts, usually ninjutsu, but also jiu jitsu and forms of karate. What kinds of ninja weapons are needed depends on what is to be done. Sharpened, battle ready swords, throwing stars and blades are necessary for competitions, whereas blunt weapons made of stainless steel are fine for practicing with. For those training to become ninjas it is required to be well versed in the usage of many weapons and so many will have to be purchased.
A unique thing about the art of the ninja is that not all the weapons are obvious. This makes it necessary to learn how to conceal weapons or make weapons out of ordinary objects, such as smoke bombs, or to create distractions for the opponent by doing something like throwing shuriken. Many ninja weapons will appear to be something else, such as the kama or the stick sword which looks like stock but inside a sharp blade is hidden.
Here are a few of the weapons used by ninja that can be both purchased for practicing or just for display purposes:
